I had cancer when I was 29.  Hodgkis Disease, stage IIA. Had cancer. Past tense. I did my 6 cycles of ABVD, got a clean PET, pulled out the port, and went on with my life.  I didn’t embrace the “survivor” label, didn’t raise money, didn’t even really talk about it. Sure, I followed up with oncology… for the most part.  Truth be told I was “lost to follow up” for a few years.

A Christmas Relapse Story

And then my phone rang.  I had been expecting a call from oncology with my scan results.  Typically, I got a call in a day or so, but I expected that the holidays had delayed their call.  But I was surprised, because it was after 7PM.  It was Dr. Peters, my oncology fellow. He began by saying, “I’m sure it’s nothing at all, but I’d like to get some more images,” a phrase I’d learn to dread. And in that moment- I knew.
