Business As Unusual

It is hard to resume

business as usual

when you’ve watched the clock’s hand

move toward midnight

as flesh

Yes, it is always ticking

in that direction

(and over again)

But now I feel the seconds

beating in my chest

Hard to invest in less than beauty

when you’ve stared into the face of

existence and its lack

Stood on the edge and clung fast

wriggled your ankles from its grasp

We are all teetering here, I grant

whether we know it or not

But I cannot stop

my stomach from turning

my toes from digging in

having seen

how far it drops

This is do beautiful and relatable. As a stage 4 survivor, I can relate, especially to these lines “Stood on the edge and clung fast/wriggled your ankles from its grasp”
Thank you for putting the scary feeling of starting into the abyss not such beautiful form,

Madeline, I love this poem so much! It speaks to what I have felt, and still feel now, but haven’t been able to put into words. Hope you have had many opportunities to invest in beauty. Thank you for sharing.
