Neuroendocrine Cancer

Paola Palmieri is 40-year old mother of two young boys (five and eight years old) who was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer at the age of 37. Paola lives in Miami Beach with her family. She works in education as an academic program manager for a language school. She has also been teaching languages for over ten years and is very passionate about learning, writing, and traveling. She loves yoga, salsa dancing, the beach, and nature in general. Paola has adopted a plant based diet and holistic approach to her healing in her cancer journey that along with her conventional treatment has greatly helped her cope and thrive with this disease.

Aging Out but Always Welcome

I recently celebrated my 43rd birthday. Something about birthdays just hits differently for a cancer patient or survivor. They are not just special days when you blow out your candles and eat cake. After a cancer diagnosis, birthdays are a lot more meaningful. They are a celebration of life, accomplishments, challenges, obstacles, and fears we face daily.

Fuck you for making me hear one of the most painful news one can bear: “You have incurable cancer”. Fuck you for making me go through the whole painstaking process of dealing with this condition, from denial to grieve to acceptance, and the dreadful memories that come along with it.

Cancerversary #1

I decided that June 1st is my cancerversary. Technically it is, give and take a few days. I was diagnosed one year ago. Something about the first that connotes a fresh start, a new beginning, a new chapter. I guess having a cancer diagnosis is exactly that one way or another.
