My name is Danielle Nicosia. August 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Metastatic Thyroid Cancer. After being misdiagnosed for several years, I had a complete thyroid removal (total thyroidectomy), as well as a many lymph nodes that were cancerous.

The Loss of My Grandfather

In May 2011, at the age of 71, my Grandfather John was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer. I remember this day like it was yesterday. It was a sunny and warm day. My grandparents came to my parents’ house to tell us about the news after his doctor’s appointment. He was told he had to start multiple rounds of chemotherapy as soon as possible.

Reflection on Where I am Today with Thyroid Cancer

In July 2012, I was diagnosed with Metastatic Thyroid Cancer after being misdiagnosed for ten years. I was being seen by a Chief Endocrinologist named Doctor Shapiro who works in Mineola, New York. He refused to listen to me until I ended up blacking out in college and was taken to the hospital.
